Making Peace; Melting Metal

By Carmen Sauceda

A hammer on metal
Bangs with all its strength
A person sweating
And a downturned mouth
Here in this shop
Where metal is broken
Then melted into submission
Pounding hammer- a noise that vibrates
And echoes off the walls, angry
A stained apron
Twisted and sobbed into
Clenched with rough hands
Here in this shop
Where metal is broken
A ring and a finger, a line of pale flesh
As the metal sits
Ready to dissolve
Here in this shop
Where metal is broken
It’s been so long,
And the ring is a reminder
Of the day a person left and
flung their promise away
and the gold ring that was left behind
The ring that matched its partner’s
Both are here, in this shop,
where metal is broken
A broken promise, an angry heart,
and a melted ring
Have found themselves here
In this shop
Where metal is broken
